Google glasses

Google is working with Chinese manufacturing giant Foxconn to assemble Google Glass in the United States, Bradshaw’s sources tell him Google is making Glass at a facility in Santa Clara, California.

The rationale is that Glass is a new technology and Google wants its engineers to be close by for any tweaking that needs to be done.

 The components and parts for Glass will still come from Asia.

The construction of Glass will happen in California. Google Glass is Google’s first crack at making its own wearable computers.

A Sydney storeman has been sentenced to at least 30 years' jail for the "planned and premeditated" rape and murder of an Indian student, who he strangled to death with a cable, stuffed into a suitcase and dumped in a canal off the Parramatta River.

Daniel Stani-Reginald, 21, and his victim, accountancy student Tosha Thakkar, lived in neighbouring apartments in a boarding house on Edwin Street, Croydon in Sydney's inner west.

The callousness of the act is disclosed in the calm manner in which the offender booked the taxi and took the body to Meadowbank. 

On the morning of March 9, 2011 Stani-Reginald waited for his victim's roommate to leave and then confronted Ms Thakkar as she walked back from a communal bathroom.

He then raped and assaulted Ms Thakkar and strangled her with a black coaxial cable.

Ms Thakkar's body was discovered in a large black-cloth case floating in a canal near Meadowbank Park by workmen undertaking regular maintenance on an oil line.

"The offender strangled her, an extraordinary cruel act," Sentencing Judge Derek Price told the NSW Supreme Court.

The court heard that the crimes had a "strong sexual element" and that Stani-Reginald had been planning them for months beforehand. He viewed thousands of disturbing internet articles and websites on serial killers and notorious rapists.

These included infamous Australian cases such as Dean Shillingsworth, the murdered toddler whose body was dumped in a suitcase.

He also read judgments on the sentences of notorious killers and viewed pornography relating to Indian women.

"There's documented evidence that he had been planning the murder for a number of years prior," Justice Price said.

"The callousness of the act is disclosed in the calm manner in which the offender booked the taxi and took the body to Meadowbank. His lack of empathy is evident from the articles he viewed online before and after the murders."

The court heard that a number of psychiatrists examined Stani-Reginald over the course of his criminal history. All but one found that while Stani-Reginald was disturbed, there was no clear evidence of a mental disorder or psychosis, even though as a child his father had murdered his mother.

Justice Price found that the 21-year-old had demonstrated no contrition or remorse and represented a serious threat to the community.

"The offender's prospects of rehabilitation are very poor. His juvenile record is replete with his refusals to accept assistance," Justice Price said.

"I'm satisfied that there's a real risk that the offender will reoffend with acts of violence and sexual assault."

Nevertheless, his honour stopped short of sentencing Stani-Reginald to life as prosecutors had suggested, finding that the offender's young age meant such a sentence could equate to as much as 60 years in jail.

He sentenced the 21-year-old to a maximum of 45 years in jail with a minimum non-parole period of 30 years.

With time served, Stani-Reginald will be eligible for parole in March 2041.

Angelina Jolie's Double Mastectomy

They praised the Hollywood actress’s courage and said she would dramatically raise the profile of the genetic defect that means some women are much more likely to develop breast cancer.

Wendy Watson, who founded the UK’s National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline after she underwent a double mastectomy aged 37 in 1992, welcomed Jolie’s move.

Mrs Watson, from near Bakewell in Derbyshire, said: "It is excellent because it is the highest profile you can get for it.

"It raises the profile for other women to look to if they have a family history and would benefit from being screened more frequently, or having surgery or having a genetic test.

"She [Jolie] probably feels that undergoing the operation is common sense but it probably does take a certain amount of courage to face it."

1. Step 1

Man drowns in Yarra River after heroic waiter saves friend

The 22-year old barman had earlier served the men at the nearby Riverland Bar.

Dave Brearley said some friends of the men who were drinking at the bar told him earlier of their plans to swim across the river.

"I said 'bye’ to them, wished them a good night and they said two guys wanted to swim across the river. I told them not to - it’s filthy and that I wouldn’t be caught dead there,’’ he told 3AW.

About 10 minutes later Mr Brearley heard the men crying for help from the middle of the river.

"I thought they were just joking, then obviously I realised they weren’t joking,’’ he said. "Then I basically just dived in."

Mr Brearley said by the time he reached the man he rescued, the other had already vanished beneath the muddy water.

"I dragged him out backwards and he was panicking, he was in shock. He’d swallowed a lot of water, so I was just trying to keep him calm and get him to the edge as fast as possible,’’ he said.

"Then he told me his friend was in there … a few other guys jumped in and tried to help him but obviously weren’t successful.’’

The brave Englishman, from Manchester, said he was an above-average swimmer and had not hesitated in jumping into the river to rescue the man.

"I was scared, obviously I thought I could be in the same position as them and in five minutes I could be drowning myself, but I couldn’t stand there and watch someone drown."

Mr Brearley said the man he dragged from the water did not appear drunk when he saw him at Riverland earlier that night.

"When they told me they were going to jump in they told me they’re not drunk, so I still advised them not to jump in and they gave the impression that they were going to tell (their friends) not to jump in after I warned them, but obviously they didn’t."

The missing man's body was found in about two metres of water near the Princes Bridge about 12.30am after search and rescue, water police, local police units and the air wing searched the area last night.He is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 27.

Riverland venue manager Andy Price said Mr Brearley dived in when he saw the two men in trouble.

"One of the guys was working with the rest of the team last night about nine o' clock," he said.

"He heard a couple of guys who went off the bank and into the river and they obviously got themselves into trouble pretty quickly.

"Dave saw what was going on, jumped on the river from our side, swam across to the south bank and got them out.

"Obviously he did what he could."

He said Mr Brearley would not return to work for a few days.

"Dave's a fairly shy, gentle kind of guy, and we will be giving him a little bit of time off just for him to be able to deal with what he's had to deal with," Mr Price said.

Paramedic team manager Susie Dean said Mr Brearley would be nominated for a bravery award.

"My understanding from witnesses that are here is that there was one very brave young gentleman from one of the restaurants beside the river here and he's actually jumped into the water and tried to swim out to almost the middle of the river and pulled one person back to shore," Ms Dean said.

"He's then gone back in to try and save the other person as well ... he’s a very brave young man to jump into the water and try and save these people…he’s gone above and beyond.”

Ms Dean said there was a very strong current in the water last night and it was cold and dark.

She said the two men who had attempted to swim across the river were with a group of friends at the time.

"It could have been far worse, there were two people in the water and another two tried to save them so we could have had a number of people in serious trouble here tonight from jumping into the Yarra thinking they were having a bit of fun and it's turned to tragedy."

It's believed the missing man was on holiday from Ireland.
