A SCRAPPY fight between two teenage girls turned dirty when one of the brawlers clobbered the other with a shovel. A video of the fight, shared online on Monday, has already become a viral sensation, inspiring scores of remixes and even a fake death report. But the foul-mouthed 16-year-old who was hit in the head with the shovel took to Twitter on Tuesday to declare she was in fact alive and well. “I’M THE GIRL that got hit in the head with the shovel lol … I’m not dead.. Idk why there’s rumors saying I am,” wrote Miranda Fugate, whose profile said she “smokes weed for a living”. The original eight-minute clip, which is available on YouTube but contains strong language, shows a fist fight between Miranda and another girl, identified as Emily Powers, escalating to the point where the shovel is thrown. Once struck, Miranda falls to the ground and immediately starts to cry. She is later heard saying she had lost her hearing.

SPORT Skating bronze medallist "Olga Graf’s" accidental striptease

RUSSIAN speed skater Olga Graf showed off more than she wanted after a bronze medal-winning performance in the Olympic Games 3,000 metres, ripping down the zip of her skin suit in delight. Graf, who won Russia’s first medal of the Sochi Games, raised her arms aloft in triumph after crossing the finishing line and then pulled her zip down to her waist. “Yes it is true. There was nothing underneath,’’ she was quoted as saying by the Sovietsky Sport daily. “We have great suits, they make the body feel light and as a result I wear nothing under them. When I finished the race I forgot about this. “And I thought, what a nightmare! And soon it will be all over YouTube. But in fact, nothing bad will come of it. “In the end, I did not show that much,’’ she mused. http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/winter-olympics/skating-bronze-medallist-olga-grafs-accidental-striptease/story-fnl611g9-1226822099206

Flappy Bird :The mysterious takedown of the Flappy Bird app Read

Video games developer Nguyen Ha Dong.
Video games developer Nguyen Ha Dong.
It was created in two or three days by an independent game developer, then quietly released in May last year. Now, the free Flappy Bird mobile app has been taken down after accusations it gamed app store rankings to become an overnight sensation and copied graphics from another game.
It all appeared to come to a head at the weekend, when the app creator, Nguyen Ha Dong, announced the grounding of the addictive game in a series of tweets on Saturday. He also apologised to Flappy Bird players.
Its chart success defies logic, it has captivated the world with its gameplay, and Dong is becoming an inspiring legend to indie app developers around the world
Earlier, Dong called Flappy Bird a success of his but said it had ruined his "simple" life.

  • AMANDA Knox says she is frightened by the "unjust'' verdict of an Italian court that has convicted her for a second time for the murder of a British student in 2007.
In the latest dramatic twist in the high-profile case, the court in Florence sentenced the former American student to 28 years and six months in prison.
After 12 hours of deliberations, the court also found Knox's former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito guilty for killing Meredith Kercher in the university town of Perugia and sentenced him to 25 years.
"The court...determines a sentence of 28 years and six months for Amanda Knox,'' said the presiding judge, Alessandro Nencini.
Knox was following the proceedings from her hometown of Seattle in the United States, where she has lived since a previous acquittal in 2011.

Britain to give 'most vulnerable' "Syrian refugees" temporary residence

Britain has announced it will give temporary residence to hundreds of vulnerable Syrian refugees, targeting those most traumatised by the three-year civil war.
Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg says refuge will be provided for female victims of sexual violence, the disabled, the elderly and torture victims.
Though there is no set quota, his office says the overall number is likely to be in the hundreds.

Britain will work with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on a case-by-case basis to identify those most in need.
"I am pleased to be able to announce today that the UK will be providing refuge to some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees," Mr Clegg said in a statement.

The city of "Homs" has been the scene of vicious fighting.

Damaged buildings line a street in the besieged area of Homs

An Australian activist with first-hand experience of the horrors of the Syrian civil war is warning fellow Australians against travelling to the country, whatever their motivations.
Brisbane man Yehya El-Kholed, who recently returned from his third trip in two years to the war-torn country, has close family ties in Syria and Lebanon, and supports the overthrow of the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
But relentless bloodshed, daily air raids on civilian areas around Aleppo and, most significantly, the descent into chaos and infighting by anti-Assad forces, have left him disillusioned.
"My advice to Australians is do not go to Syria ... because you're going to get killed," he said.
"They're killing Westerners. Free Syrian Army will kill them thinking they're ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), and ISIS will kill them thinking they're Free Syrian Army.

"Puerto Rico" Rocked by 6.4-magnitude "Earthquake"

A strong earthquake out to sea that shook Puerto Rico early Monday is one of the largest to hit the U.S. territory in recent years, cracking floors and causing some power outages, but no major damages or injuries, officials said.
The 6.4-magnitude quake struck just after midnight about 57 kilometres north of Hatillo, at a depth of 28 kilometres, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
At least 70 aftershocks have been reported since then, with at least three of a magnitude 3.5 or greater, said Gisela Baez Sanchez, a geologist with Puerto Rico's Seismic Network.
"All of Puerto Rico is in a seismic danger zone," she said in a phone interview. "We have to be prepared."
Broken windows, a busted water line and cracked floors and walls were reported in some areas along the north coast, while authorities said power outages occurred in the north city of Bayamon, close to the island's capital. Dozens of people said they felt buildings sway in the capital of San Juan, about 98 kilometres from the quake's epicenter.
Hundreds of people called Puerto Rico's emergency management agency, but no injuries or major damages have been reported, spokesman Carlos Acevedo said in a phone interview.

Diplomatic storm : arrest diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York

Although India has taken a tough stand against the U.S. over the arrest of its diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York, the government’s muted response to other provocations such as spying shows that it is keen to remain America’s “global strategic partner”. By JOHN CHERIAN

THE arrest and strip-search of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade by the New York Police on December 12 has expectedly evoked strong reactions in India. The political parties were united in defending the honour of Devyani, who is accused of committing a “visa fraud” and of making a false declaration in connection with the employment of her Indian housemaid, Sangeeta Richard. Under the United States’ law, the charges against the Deputy Consul General at the Indian Consulate in New York could lead to a jail term of more than 10 years.
The US Media has been scathing about New Delhi's response. "India is responding with investigations and administrative actions directed by the government for political ends — a tactic common in authoritarian states such as Russia or China but unworthy of a democracy," Washington Post said in an editorial on Wednesday.

"Its bullying measures have ranged from the petty — withdrawing the US embassy's permit to import alcohol — to the irresponsible — removing security barricades from the street in front of the facility," it further said
