Shoppers were lucky to escape injury last night after a neon Kmart sign at Broadway Shopping Centre caught alight and dripped flames onto the ground below.
Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman Superintendent Phil Lindsay said firefighters were called about 8pm and found the sign ablaze, eight storeys up.
Using a cherrypicker, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about half an hour, Superintendent Lindsay said.
He said drivers and pedestrians called triple-0 after seeing parts of the sign melting.
"They saw the flames dripping down as the sign melted. Fortunately no one was injured.
"Firefighters did a great job of preventing the fire spreading inside the building."
Superintendent Lindsay said the cause of the fire was still being investigated, but it was believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault.
