  • AMANDA Knox says she is frightened by the "unjust'' verdict of an Italian court that has convicted her for a second time for the murder of a British student in 2007.
In the latest dramatic twist in the high-profile case, the court in Florence sentenced the former American student to 28 years and six months in prison.
After 12 hours of deliberations, the court also found Knox's former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito guilty for killing Meredith Kercher in the university town of Perugia and sentenced him to 25 years.
"The court...determines a sentence of 28 years and six months for Amanda Knox,'' said the presiding judge, Alessandro Nencini.
Knox was following the proceedings from her hometown of Seattle in the United States, where she has lived since a previous acquittal in 2011.

AMANDA Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito have been found guilty for the second time of killing their British flatmate in Italy in 2007.
Meredith Kercher, 21, was found in a pool of blood after being brutally stabbed in the villa she rented with Knox, while they studied in the Italian university town of Perugia.
In 2009, the former couple of Knox and Sollecito were first convicted of the gruesome murder. Prosecutors said at the time the murder was the result of a sex-game gone horribly wrong.http://www.news.com.au/world/amanda-knox-guilty-again-the-murder-of-meredith-kercher/story-fndir2ev-1226814824543

Britain to give 'most vulnerable' "Syrian refugees" temporary residence

Britain has announced it will give temporary residence to hundreds of vulnerable Syrian refugees, targeting those most traumatised by the three-year civil war.
Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg says refuge will be provided for female victims of sexual violence, the disabled, the elderly and torture victims.
Though there is no set quota, his office says the overall number is likely to be in the hundreds.

Britain will work with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on a case-by-case basis to identify those most in need.
"I am pleased to be able to announce today that the UK will be providing refuge to some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees," Mr Clegg said in a statement.

The city of "Homs" has been the scene of vicious fighting.

Damaged buildings line a street in the besieged area of Homs

An Australian activist with first-hand experience of the horrors of the Syrian civil war is warning fellow Australians against travelling to the country, whatever their motivations.
Brisbane man Yehya El-Kholed, who recently returned from his third trip in two years to the war-torn country, has close family ties in Syria and Lebanon, and supports the overthrow of the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
But relentless bloodshed, daily air raids on civilian areas around Aleppo and, most significantly, the descent into chaos and infighting by anti-Assad forces, have left him disillusioned.
"My advice to Australians is do not go to Syria ... because you're going to get killed," he said.
"They're killing Westerners. Free Syrian Army will kill them thinking they're ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), and ISIS will kill them thinking they're Free Syrian Army.
